Ich habe das Original als Hörbuch genossen:
Baking blogger Quincy Carpenter has overcome her past, when she was the only survivor of an attack that killed all of her friends and left her wounded. She does not want to be a “final girl”, the sole survivor, but did she tell it all? Quincy manages to keep a balance of sorts thanks to a lot of Xanax, the odd item in a secret drawer, and living peacefully with her partner Jeff, attorney. That is, until Samantha “Sam” Boyd comes challenging that peace of mind – she, too, is a final girl. And when Lisa Milner, another girl in the club that knows no pity, is found dead in an apparent suicide, no old truths will remain intact.
I have been known to read the night away now and then. This is the first time this happened to me with an audio book – speaker Stephanie Cannon has been marvelous for a good 11 hours. She not only manages several dialects, styles and keeps up the speed, she also gives each character their own voice. Warning: Many thriller readers want breathless page 1-N – this book has that in several parts, but long chapters will rather come over as a psychological thriller, slowly building up a general atmosphere of evil. I loved it. I loved how you slowly realized that almost everybody has something to hide – Quincy has her secret drawer, and how much has she really forgotten? Why is Jeff away that much? For what reason does Quincy’s mom Sheila want her to forget? Why is “co-girl” Sam provoking Quincy to try risky ventures? Can Cop Coop keep her safe again?
While at first you listen to author Sager peel off layer by layer in the “now” for his main characters, he also starts to mix in bits from the past, when Quincy went to Pine Cottage. After this, all of the others would be dead, killed by the man whose name cannot even be said out loud by the young woman. Of course, the tension is high because you know this – but do you know all? Does Quincy know all? Read or listen and enjoy.
5 stars. I currently look into more both from speaker Stephanie Cannon and author Riley Sager.
