„It Ends With Us" the probably most hyped novel on bookstagram, booktok and booktube didn’t fail to impress me. That’s all I can say… Well, further into detail: The way Colleen Hoover structured the book was kind of genius! There were two strands of the story, one for the past plot and one that illustrates the protagonist’s, Lily’s, present life. To introduce the reader to Lily's past life, the author used diary entries that told about Atlas and Lily's history. Yes, I know that was genius of Colleen Hoover!
Besides her past life, the reader also gets to know the characters in her new life in Boston, where everything’s supposed to be better! There she made herself some friends and even found herself a – on the first sight – charming boyfriend. But is everything as perfect as it seems? That’s what Lily has to ask herself when she bumps into Atlas once again. The charming, mysterious boy, that kind of saved her teenage life.
CoHo’s novel didn’t fail to unite a love story of old and new friends; brave, unique and strong as well as empowering characters and a special view on a subject that affects the whole world. Domestic violence is the topic that the author chose to be a primary part of the story and with telling Lily’s as well as her mother’s story, she clearly provided a different view on how the affected people feel and act. That’s what touched me the most!
Last, I want to thank Colleen Hoover for her honest and impressing words at the end of the novel where she told about her own experiences with domestic violence, which also pointed out a new view on the topic as well.
Concluding, “It Ends With Us” is not a light themed novel at all – neither of CoHo’s books are – but I strongly recommend reading it.
