It wasn´t as much fun as the first one, but nonetheless, I was entertained.

The tone has changed that´s for sure. Everything is darker, evil is now in bloom and nothing is as it was before. Even the characters have changed. Sophie is still selfish, arrogant and malicious and brings a certain mean and jealous tone and behavior to the plot. But you see as well, that she doesn´t really think things through. To be honest, I missed the hilarious scenes, the funny things and great quick-witted dialogues the first book had. That was a real blast.

Sophie is a real bitch. And Agatha has to kind of do a dance to keep her friend Sophie happy and to get what she believes is necessary to get them both save back home.

It was no question, a wonderful story and I had my great moments during reading. But in the end, I missed some of the wit and charms and show the two main figures were showing.

If you like fantasy combined with a hint of the orient, some far away legends and a young woman who has a great ability to show the unthinkable, then you will find in this book a very entertaining story.

Yes, Rebel of the Sands sums it pretty much up, what this book is all about.

Amani wants to go away from the house everyone except her calls her home. With the death of her mother, she had to move into the house of her aunt and uncle. The first sees her as a thread, the later as a new wife. Both is not good in Amani´s eyes and so she starts to plan when and how to leave this place of thread. And when she meets this stranger one night at a shooting club, she knows that her time has come. A time she´d never thought would turn out the way it did and who brings her new things she never knew would be possible.

From the beginning, the reader is catapulted in a mixture of oriental ambience, magic and the hard and very strict world girls live in. They are not allowed to do many things besides cleaning the house and find a man, get married and start their own family away from the one they came.
Amani is a sixteen-year-old teenager, who wants to leave this tiny world and go to a town where she believes that everything is better - has to be better. From her personal point of view, the reader starts to see what it looks like to want things that seem out of reach, to be treated as if you´d have no brain and as if you were nothing but weak and a burden.

Alwyn Hamilton uses a soft but very poetic language. She allows her figures to speak open in a way that lets you listen that makes you look closer to what happens. There is action, yes, and some scenes are actually filled with it. But in a way that you can´t take your eye off. It is as if Amani dances a beautiful but deadly dance when she fights against the creatures that come out during a desert night.

This novel contains a very strong main figure, who can and does things you wouldn´t expect her to do. You are taken into a world where some things better stay hidden to give you the chance to survive and where girls mean less than a cat in the street.

Alwyn Hamilton created with Amani a young, strong girl who wants more; way more than she will ever be able to have in her hometown. Amani is a figure and character who is willing to fight for what she wants, to fight if she has to, to prevent herself from being part in plans that aren´t her plans. And she knows what to say and when.

I was impressed and had a beauty before my inner eyes that were so breathtaking and shaken, that I can´t wait to read the next book. There has to be something more, that Amani is looking for and I want to know what that is. So this first book is one I recommend for everyone who looks for some fantasy, magic, and oriental ambience in one place.

B. A. Paris versteht es hervorragend, mit ihrem einfachen und klaren Schreibstil von Beginn an eine bedrohliche Stimmung und sehr beklemmende Atmosphäre, zu erzeugen. Ihr Spannungsaufbau ist so effektvoll wie einfach. Die Handlung wird aus der Sicht von Grace geschildert und dabei wechselt sich die Gegenwart mit der Vergangenheit ab.

Auf diese Weise ist man von Beginn an intensiv im Geschehen drin und wird auf beängstigende Art mit dem Leben von Grace und Jack vertraut gemacht. Die Handlung ist einerseits so subtil wie das Agieren von Jack selbst, auf der anderen Seite wechselt die Autorin immer genau dann in eine andere Zeit, wenn eine Szene gerade einem Spannungspunkt entgegen strebt. So entsteht ein Spannungsbogen, der bis zum Schluss nicht loslässt. Kurz vor Ende dreht die Autorin den Spieß dann herum und plötzlich liest man was eine Figur in der Gegenwart macht, während der gefasste Plan in die Tat umgesetzt wird.

Man sollte sich nie auf den äußeren Eindruck verlassen. Der Teufel steckt im Detail und das ist hier im wörtlichen Sinne gemeint. Die Autorin zeichnet mit wenigen Worten ihre Figuren, bringt eine Perfektion zutage, die einen von Beginn an misstrauisch werden lässt, auch wenn man zunächst nicht genau bezeichnen kann, was einen so misstrauisch macht.

Grace hat schon so manchen Kampf in ihrem Leben geführt und gewonnen. Ihre Eltern wollten sie eigentlich nicht, und auch ihre kleine Schwester wird abgelehnt. So übernimmt Grace schon früh die Verantwortung für sie, erkämpft sich deren Platz in der Familie und tut alles, um ihr und sich das Leben so angenehm wie möglich zu machen.

Millie ist ein äußerst intelligentes und direktes Mädchen. Die 17-Jährige sieht die Welt mit ganz besonderen Augen und wird von allen gründlich unterschätzt. Sie nimmt Dinge wahr, die sich anderen entziehen und hat eine Auffassungsgabe, die einfach nur verblüffend ist.


Ein Psychothriller, der keinen kalt lassen dürfte und so fesselnd ist, dass man ihn praktisch über Nacht liest. Die psychologische Raffinesse ist unglaublich und die Gestaltung der einzelnen Charaktere tut ein Übriges, um den Leser in eine Welt des Scheins zu entführen. Absolut empfehlenswert.

Ich schwanke zwischen seltsamer Lesebegeisterung und leichter Enttäuschung. Von Beginn an war die Story etwas langweilig. Das war ein eigenartiger Mischmasch aus konfuser Geschichte, eiskalten Figuren und einem nicht ganz logischen Plot. Und was die Autorin mit Adam und Rayne gemacht hat, dass hat mir absolut nicht gefallen.

Mir geht es wie so manch anderem Leser dieses Romans. Die Geschichte ist nicht wirklich meine, lässt mich aber auch nicht wirklich los. Vieles ergibt über lange Zeit keinen Sinn, ehe die Autorin dann im letzten Drittel buchstäblich ein Feuerwerk an Action und Ereignissen abbrennt und urplötzlich die Hölle los ist. Selbst jetzt, wo ich diese Zeilen tippe, bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich das als gut empfunden habe oder nicht. Aber eins weiß ich, die Umweltkomponente, die Victoria Hume hier anspricht, die ist unglaublich interessant.
