The present book is a revision of all known recent and fossil nominal taxa within the genus Vallonia. Introductorily the history of investigations of Vallonia is briefly summarized. In the general part the knowledge of the genus concerning the structure of the shell and the soft body, the biology, the ecology, and the general distribution in space and time is presented. The applicability of species concepts is discussed with regard to the reproduction mode of the vallonias (self-fertilization as th rule, cross-fertilization probably being an occasionally occuring exception). The hypothetical relationships between the recent and fossil Vallonia species are displayed as a dendrogram with explanations. In the special part 40 species and subspecies supposed to be valid are treated comprehensively. A key facilitates their identification. Every species and subspecies is described in detail and compared with similar taxa. Synonymy lists are given. Eight (sub)species are described as new to science.
