Michael Kerstgens, 1986

(Please scroll down for English version) 1986 – die Achtziger sind zur Hälfte vorbei. Im April schmilzt in Tschernobyl der Reaktor durch, der Kalte Krieg taumelt seinem Ende entgegen, Helmut Kohl ist Kanzler, AIDS wird gerade als pandemische Bedrohung auch bei uns wahrgenommen, die bundesrepublikanische Wohlstandsgesellschaft beginnt den Konsum als Freizeitvergnügen zu betrachten.... In diesem Jahr bekam Michael Kerstgens, damals Student an der Gesamthochschule Essen (vormals Folkwangschule), ein Stipendium mit dem Auftrag, sich mit dem Thema „Freizeit“ fotografisch auseinanderzusetzten. Er nutzt es, um den Westdeutschen bei ihren liebsten Freizeitbeschäftigungen zuzuschauen: Sport, Fitness, Fußball, Feiern, Freibad, Tennis, Golf (und Minigolf) spielen, Golf (und Opel) fahren, Shopping.... Klaus Honnef bezeichnet in seinem Text die 80er als Lieblingsjahrzehnt der Westdeutschen. Im Vergleich zu Ihren Landsleuten in der DDR ging es ihnen hervorragend. In den Publikationen der letzten Jahren stand die DDR-Vergangenheit zu Recht im Vordergrund. Umso spannender ist der fotografische Systemvergleich, den uns Kerstgens mit seinen lakonisch-dokumentarischen, präzise beobachteten Bildern einer relativ sorglosen bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft ermöglicht. Die großen Veränderungen am Ende des Jahrzehnts waren unvorstellbar – das hier und jetzt war wichtiger und unterhaltsamer! Für alle, die die 80er in der BRD bewusst miterlebt haben, sind die Bilder von Michael Kerstgens eine (schrecklich-schöne) Erinnerungsreise, für alle anderen eine wichtige visuelle Lehrstunde!

Michael Kerstgens(*1960), mehrfach preisgekrönt, arbeitet seit seiner Studienzeit in den achtziger Jahren fotografisch. „1986“ ist seine sechste Buchveröffentlichung. Seit 2007 ist er Professor an der Hochschule Darmstadt.


In 1986, the decade was halfway over. In April, the reactor in Chernobyl melted down, the Cold War was coming to an end, Helmut Kohl was chancellor, AIDS was just being perceived as a pandemic threat in Germany, and the affluent society of the Federal Republic of Germany was beginning to view consumption as a leisure activity. That year, Michael Kerstgens, then a student at the Gesamthochschule Essen (formerly the Folkwangschule), received a scholarship with the assignment to take a photographic look at the subject of leisure. He used it to observe West Germans engaging in their favorite leisure activities, including sports, fitness, soccer, partying, outdoor swimming, tennis, playing golf (and miniature golf), driving Golfs (and Opels), and shopping. In his essay, Klaus Honnef describes the 1980s as the favorite decade of the West Germans. Compared to their compatriots in the German Democratic Republic, they were doing extremely well. While the GDR past has been the focus of many recent publications, this laconic documentary looks at the other side, precisely observing a relatively carefree West German society. The sweeping changes at the end of the decade were inconceivable—the here and now was more important and more entertaining! For those who lived through the '80s in the FRG, the pictures of Michael Kerstgens are a (terribly-beautiful) trip down memory lane, for all others a mandatory visual tutorial!

Michael Kerstgens (*1960), winner of several awards, has been working with photography since his student days in the 1980s. 1986 is his sixth book. Since 2007 he has been a professor at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt.
