Patricia Waller, "Even Worse Luck"
The new edition of Patricia Waller’s 2009 catalogue “Bad Luck”, now with the title “Even Worse Luck”, has been expanded to include the works from her new series “Broken Heroes,” on view for the first time in the exhibition of that same title at Galerie Deschler Berlin in the summer of 2012. In this new series Patricia Waller reflects critically on the cult of the star in our society, where the star, the celebrity or the idol serve as a contemporary substitute for the more traditional hero. As is customary with her work, Waller’s figures, all done in crochet work, are marked by biting irony and black humor. Surely you have not seen these heroes as presented here by Waller: Ernie is a drunk bum with his yellow rubber ducky who has seen better days, Spiderman is hopelessly entangled in his own net, and Sponge Bob confronts us threateningly as a suicide bomber with enough explosives strapped around his body to lay a city block to waste.
