The prequel to the twisting mystery “We were liars” plays several decades earlier and is about another generation of the Sinclair family. They too have secrets and they too have been lying, pretending to be fine for way too long. It’s a speciality of the Sinclair family, and so the truth is spoken for the first time decades later, when Carrie, the oldest Sinclair daughter, tells the story to the ghost of her dead son.
As I devoured “we were liars” in a single sitting, I was accordingly excited to read this book. I didn’t quite remember all the names and details of the previous novel, but luckily that wasn’t necessary. As soon as I started reading, I was caught up in the unique atmosphere of Beechwood Island once again.
E. Lockhart’s writing is concise but still, she managed to effortlessly draw me into the mysterious past of the Sinclair sisters. Even though I had more suspicion about what to expect this time, E. Lockhart’s unreliable storytelling held several surprises.
The characters in the story weren’t easily lovable, still, the author made it possible to feel a certain kind of sympathy for them, even the worst ones. There wasn’t a good or bad, still – or maybe because of it – I felt with the characters.
The mysterious secret itself maybe wasn’t as unexpected as in “we were liars”, but this didn’t make the book less enjoyable. E. Lockhart understands to give the reader a sense of unease, which makes one wonder and is so addictive that one can barely stop reading.
This is a quick and catching read, that will keep you hooked from the first line to the last. With its beach vibe, it’s the perfect summer holiday read.
