The world is increasingly designed to depress us. Happiness isn’t very good for the economy. If we were happy with what we had, why would we need more?
Having just bought another one of Matt Haig's books, which I have not read yet, I somehow stumbled upon this one which talks about how the author was struck with depression at age 24. I took a chance and bought it - and am so glad I did! His writing is real and honest and easy to read. So far I have been lucky not to be struck by depression but many of my loved ones have. This book makes it easier to comprehend what people with depression and anxiety go through and offers steps to take which have helped the author.
Haig starts at the beginning: one day he woke up in ibiza and just did not feel like his normal self. He describes how he coped with the next few years, struggling with depression. His words are truly beautiful, there were many quotes I wanted to mark while writing, just to come back to it later. Somehow Haig made it through these dark days, he managed to get the black dog to leave. In this book, there are lists: what did help him, what made things worse, and one quite funny (in a sarcastic way) one of him listing things he got more sympathy for than his depression. There are so many important truths in this book. I am not a writer, I'm not good at writing reviews, but I do hope you give this book a chance.
Lastly, I want to say: everyone, read this book! All of us know (or will know) someone suffering from depression, or are affected themselves. Read it and please pass it on. And finally, Matt, thank you so much for having the courage to write this book! I felt so deeply connected to you and your wonderful wife reading this book. I also for the first time was able to understand what it must feel like having depression. You did mention you sometimes read reviews of your books. Well, I hope you read mine and know you were able to touch my life deeply through your writing.
