In 1980-1981 road construction work lead to the discovery of 23 graves [Dürrnberg no. 201-223] containing at least 66 individuals and belonging to the northernmost necropolis of the Dürrnberg. They had been deposited in Ha D2/3 to Lt C1. As was common at the Dürrnberg, they were biritual graves in wooden burial chambers encased in stone, which originally had been covered by a barrow and rarely had been surrounded by additional circular or four-sided stone enclosures around the spherical or pyramidal tumulus. Due to secondary burials or robbing, all graves had been disturbed to a greater or lesser extent. Nevertheless, several cases of high-quality weaponry and dress accessories [chariot, helmet, sword, jewellery, etc.] survived, which attests the equality of these graves and the “princely graves” from the Dürrnberg. Amongst the helmets there are some of the earliest iron helmets of Central Europe. The few Hallstatt graves, too, can be attributed to the upper classes because of their gold armrings and bronze vessels. Most of the deceased were males who had died young. The food offerings matched earlier evidence and showed a predominance of meat-rich parts of small cattle.
