Die ältere Römische Kaiserzeit in Südniedersachsen

Mit dieser Arbeit wird erstmals seit über 70 Jahren der Fundstoff der Römischen Kaiserzeit im Arbeitsgebiet wieder umfassend bearbeitet, das durch die Befunde von Kalkriese erneut in den Mittelpunkt des Forschungsinteresses gelangte. Auf die Darstellung der naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten und einer Quellenkritik des Fundstoffes folgt die Vorstellung der einzelnen Fundgattungen. Von diesen werden 10 Siedlungen exemplarisch vorgestellt, unter denen Schwiegershausen [Baubefunde], Meensen und Rosdorf [Importe] herausragen. Die Keramik gehört dem rheinwesergermanischen Formenkreis nach R. von Uslar an, umfasst jedoch kaum vollständige Gefäße, sondern zumeist nur Reste aus Oberflächenfundstellen. Importfunde erweisen Kontakte ins Baltikum und ins Römische Reich, die wohl mit mobilen Bevölkerungsteilen zusammenhängen. Eine ethnische Zuweisung der Bevölkerung zum antiken Stamm der Cherusker muss unterbleiben, weil das Material diese nicht hergibt, sondern vielmehr eine Dreiteilung des Gebietes anzeigt. Die topographische Lage der Fundstellen ist von agrarwirtschaftlichen Faktoren und Verkehrswegen bestimmt.

This study is the first for more than 70 years to give an overall survey of the find material of the Roman Iron Age in the research area, which returned into the focus of interest when the evidence of Kalkriese had been discovered. An account of the natural environment and a source criticism of the find material is followed by a discussion of the individual find categories. Of these, 10 settlements are introduced as examples, amongst which the sites of Schwiegershausen [construction remains], Meensen and Rosdorf [import finds] are of outstanding importance. The pottery belongs to the Rhine-Weser-Germanic type according to R. von Uslar, but consists mainly of sherds from surface scatters and hardly of any complete vessels. Imported goods indicate contacts with the Baltic and the Roman Empire and are probably connected to mobile parts of the population. An ethnic interpretation of the population as the ancient tribe of the Cherusci must be refrained from, because the material is insufficient to support this, but rather indicates a tripartite division of the area. The topographical situation of the find sites is dictated by agricultural factors and traffic routes.
