Revolutionskultur ohne Revolution

Die französischen Nationalfeste im Rheinland unter dem Direktorium am Beispiel des Saardepartements (1794-1804)
In 1798 the French Revolutionary festivals were introduced to the Rhineland. The Rhineland however had not been a part of France and had not shared the process of the French Revolution. On the contrary the Rhineland was annexed and received the French system of government by administrative law. Hence, the French Revolutionary culture without the experience of the French Revolution.
These festivals are events in the public sphere which follow each other at intervals of a month or even a fortnight. This enables a close analysis of the reaction of the population to the ideas of the French Revolution and the reality of the French administration, which are sometimes in contrast to the long-run reputation of the French institutions among the liberals of the 19th century.
Based on particularly abundant sources which include iconographic sources, the French Revolutionary festivals are studied particularly in the case of the Department of Saar. It is perhaps the first study devoted to the French Revolutionary festivals of an entire department.
