Opinion:
First of all, I wanted to say I've seen the movie several times before reading the book. I thought it would be time to also read the story that has caught my interest for more than once.
Now I want to talk a little about the content of the book. As I have told you, I've watched the movie more than one time yet and I still think it is a masterpiece. Therefore, I had high expectations for the book and I was not disappointed. Although, some might think it is pretty brutal and boring at the same time, for me it was quite as I expected it. It was the perfect mixture of the narcism and materialism of the world as well as the boredom of an everyday life. Ellis wanted to put forward a critique on the society back then, when he wrote the book. In my opinion, the book still points out the most critique worthy parts of society nowadays. Yes, the most parts of the books are really brutal and bloody, but this makes the book the way it should be: a critique.
The author did a great job on character building concerning the protagonists. They are all far from perfect and, therefore, authentic. I actually think it is scary how realistic they are.
The writing style is interesting. It is not that easy to read but at the same time not too complicated, So, it was no problem to read the book within a few days.

Conclusion:
All in all, the book is one of the classics that everybody should have read! Therefore, I would recommend reading it to every reader that is interested in classics and authentic books.

Mit "American Psycho" hat Bret Easton Ellis einen Klassiker erschaffen, der in keinem Bücherregal fehlen sollte.
Wenn auch teils die Aufzählungen des Protagonisten Patrick Bateman sehr ermüdend erscheinen, untermalen sie doch die konsumorientierte Gesellschaft in der er lebt.
Es ist ein Buch das wunderbar die Vereinsamung aller beschreibt und unser Streben nach immer Mehr. Weiterhin spannend ist das Spiel mit Realität und Wahnvorstellungen.

Patrick Bateman is a successfull business man in a prospering company central New York. He's clothed in designer wardrobe from head to toe and is not the least shy to say so that even his underwear cost 60$ a piece. He's a hunter: During the day he competes with his colleagues for the most prestige clients, who's got the most elegants business cards and who has the biggest knowledge about proper attire and labels, in the evening he's in search for the best hardbody model-like companion for dinner in the best and hottest restaurants in the city. No dinner cost under 400$. He attends the hippest clubs with his colleagues and enjoy some lines of cocaine, typical evening routine for Bateman. During the night his greatest hunts occure, he's living his fantasies about killing homeless people and torturing prostitutes and escorts before murdering them.
It's the story of a most peculiar and odd American Dream where men only differ in the labels they wear and otherwise try to be are so much alike, nearly equal that they wish to outstand and be something singular in a most strange way.

Reading American Psycho was a very controversial task for me. On the one hand it was interesting to discover the nature of this character Bateman, on the other hand it was a bit of a pain in the ass to read for pages and pages to go on about his morning routine in the shower about how many different washes, gels, creams and other beauty products he uses or reading about a debate what to properly wear to a lunch business meating but I guess it's a neccessity in order to create the picture of a character so occupied with things that secretly bore him so much to death that he developed killing fantasies of the most perverse kind. Actually Bateman as a character is not that important, the name could be randomized with all his other office colleagues since they don't differ so much from each other. Reading about his torturing methods is not for the soft-hearted people, because other than just following whats current at the moment in fashion, beauty, nightlife he's very creative when it comes to dismember bodies.

Es ist Jahre her, dass ich „American Psycho“ gelesen habe. Trotzdem ist mir der Roman noch ziemlich gut in Erinnerung geblieben – vielleicht mehr, als mir lieb ist. Normalerweise breche ich Bücher nicht ab, aber hier war ich mehrmals kurz davor gewesen.

Und nach dem Lesen habe ich zumindest verstanden, warum das Buch auf dem Index landete. Normalerweise finde ich diese Form der Bevormundung blöd. Aber wenn’s denn sein muss – packt eine FSK-Zahl drauf und fertig. Warum das in Sonderfällen nicht auch bei Büchern machen? Aber ich schweife ab.

Während des Lesens hatte ich extrem widersprüchliche Gefühle. Es gibt ellenlange Beschreibungen völlig nichtiger Dinge, zum Beispiel das Aussehen von Visitenkarten – ob deren Farbe Elfenbein oder Eierschale ist, welche Schriftart verwendet wurde und so weiter. Es wird debattiert, in welches angesagte Restaurant man essen gehen soll, Bateman spricht viel über seine Lieblingsmusik und bestimmte LPs. Man verfolgt seitenweise seine Körperpflege und die Wahl seiner Kleidung. Kapitalismus ist ein durchgängig wichtiges Thema des Romans.

Die scheinbar beliebigen Belanglosigkeiten plätschern so vor sich hin – und wechseln sich dann mit Batemans sadistischen Neigungen, seinen Sexorgien und seinen immer brutaler ausfallenden bestialischen Morden ab. Ich glaube, als das Buch damals erschien, war es ziemlich schockierend zu lesen, aber ebenso glaube ich, dass es auch heute noch schockiert. Denn in jeder Zeile schwingt eine grauenhafte Gleichgültigkeit mit, die Bateman als Erzähler suggeriert.

„American Psycho“ kennt kaum Tabus, um seinen Protagonisten in all seinen Facetten darzustellen. Seine Sexualität, seine egomanischen Züge, seine Langeweile vom Leben, seine Gewaltbereitschaft, sein Drang zu töten – schonungslos stürzt Ellis seine Leser von seitenlanger Monotonie in Gewaltexplosionen und umgekehrt.

Dabei ist der Roman nicht im klassischen Sinne spannend. Hier und da musste ich mich regelrecht durchquälen, weil einfach nichts passiert ist – nur um einige Seiten später eine neue brutale Aktion zu lesen. Insofern hat „American Psycho“ viele unterschiedliche Empfindungen in mir ausgelöst, von gelangweilt über schockiert und angeekelt bis hin zu beeindruckt.

Bei diesem Buch bin ich echt hin- und hergerissen. Einerseits habe ich noch nie ein so "krasses" Buch gelesen, welches mir selbst im Hochsommer eine Gänsehaut beschert hat und andererseits war ich schon etwas genervt von den endlos langen Produktbeschreibungen. Ich hatte so das Gefühl, dass das Buch mit einem "Dauerwerbebuch"-Aufkleber versehen werden sollte.
Da wurden ellenlang Designermarken oder Kosmetikprodukte aufgezählt, was ich als teilweise sehr störend empfand.
