Dear Daisy,
I think I found my new favourite book. It very clearly is „The House at the Cerulean Sea“ by TJ Klune, which was released in 2020 by TOR. I found my way to it through various recommendations and I have to admit: they were more than right to say that this book is as close to perfect as it gets.
The Plot
In this story we follow Linus. A middle aged man, working a classical 9 to 5 job as a caseworker responsible for taking care of Magical Youth, going about his daily routine in dreary, rainy London. But then he gets sent on an assignment to a remote island to investigate an orphanage being the home to the most dangerous of magical children. As he arrives at this new place and gets to know the children and their guardians, he realises that maybe his former life wasn’t quite as fulfilling as he thought and that maybe, just maybe, there is more to life than work and routine. And that sometimes, bursting your bubble isn’t the worst thing that can happen to one…
So what did I love specifically about this?
The Characters
The character work was excellent. I feel like I really got to know the (admittedly quite extensive) cast. Of course, there is Linus, our main character. His character development is astounding and I loved that I got to witness it first hand as he is the story’s focaliser. Admittedly, I was a bit sceptical at first if I’d be able to identify with him at all but it wasn’t a problem at all. Linus is a complex character with strong morals and his heart in just the right place and I’m sure most if not all readers will find a way to identify with him in one way or another.
The Writing
Oh boy, did I love the writing! It was beyond beautiful. Perhaps the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read. The dialogues felt lively, the world building was excellent and the descriptions were captivating. All of these things together managed to make me feel like I was experiencing the story firsthand. I was drawn into the story from the very beginning and didn’t want it to end (thus the long time it took me to finish this book).
It’s captivating, it’s enchanting, it’s pure magic. If you haven’t done so, read it now! You will not live to regret it - I promise.
Love,
Daffy
